PART TWO

HOME SWEET HOME

CHAPTER NINE

“PCP?” Max had asked. “The fuck you want that for? Nobody takes that shit these days. It fucks you up too much.”

I sipped my beer. “That’s what I’m looking for.”

“Jack, I don’t mean ‘fucks you up’ in a good way. I took that shit at a party once and dude, I tripped harder than any acid you ever dreamed. A wicked bad trip too, lemme tell ya. I was paranoid to the point of panic. Made me crazy aggressive. I may not look like much, but I tossed some guy down the stairs and kicked the shit outta him just ’cause he was talkin’ to my girl. And on PCP, ya crash hard. I was so anxious I had to isolate myself in my apartment for weeks.” He took a drag on his cigarette, the rings under his eyes darker every day. “I’ve seen a guy punch a car to pieces on that stuff. Took four cops to pin him down and then he broke the cuffs. And he wasn’t any bigger than my skinny ass. It was like seeing David Banner turn into the Hulk.”

“I can handle it, Max.”

“I’m just sayin’. People are even known to kill themselves.”

Exactly, I’d thought.

Max told me he’d see what he could do. He had the mushroom tea but getting PCP would involve reaching out to his local dealer. Later that night, Max met me at The Chimney, delivering my complete order.

“No matter what you do,” he’d said. “Don’t take this shit together. You’ll go insane.”

***

Seri’s eyes were dilated and bloodshot, simultaneously. She looked around wildly as we pulled into the driveway, an animal cornered. She babbled under her breath in a schizophrenic panic. I wasn’t worried she’d make a run for it now. I’d driven on the freeway long enough for the drugs to blast her mind to bits. Her nails sunk into the sleeve of my shirt as if she’d be sucked into space if she let go. Perhaps, in a way, she would be.

Though she was aware I’d poisoned her, she latched herself on to the only available adult; the one man who might help her through this. I touched her wrist. Her pulse pounded. Sweat slicked her hair to her skull.

I hit the remote and the garage door opened. As we pulled into the shadows, Seri panted like a hound. I had paper grocery bags in the house just in case, having anticipated the possibility she’d hyperventilate. The last thing I wanted was for her to pass out. I waited for the garage door to close before unlocking the car. Seri shrieked and clung to my arm, my little pet monkey.

“No! Don’t leave me!”

“Relax,” I said. “We’re going inside.”

I pulled free, went around to her side, and undid her seatbelt.

“Leo . . . ” she said, “Leo . . . something’s wrong . . . ”

“Yes. It is.”

I scooped her up like a man carrying his new bride across the threshold. Her delicate body quaked in my arms.
